Castaway, directed by Nicholas Roeg, tells the story of two strangers who spend a year together alone on a remote tropical island. Gerald (Oliver Reed), middle-aged and successful, hopes to get away from his tedious life for a year and places an advertisement for a young woman to join him on an island paradise. Lucy (Amanda Donohoe) responds to his advertisement and decides to take a chance on this unusual and risky adventure. They do not really prepare well for rough outdoor survival and life gets difficult and dangerous at times. Their ability to find food falters and starvation is a real risk. Lucy and Gerald have very different expectations about their relationship and this dynamic causes most of the tension in the film. During the course of the year the true strengths and weaknesses of the two emerges and often in surprising ways. The photography on the island is lovely and gives the sense of harsh survival surrounded by beauty.moreless
