Casualties of War is a 1989 drama starring Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn and based on actual events from the Vietnam War. Michael J. Fox plays Max Ericksson, a soldier during Vietnam. Most of the film takes place in a flashback of Max's to when he was a private during the war, beginning with a surprise attack on his squad that nearly kills Max. He's saved by his Sergeant, Tony Meserve, played by Sean Penn. Private Ericksson is a brave and noble young man, trying to maintain a sense of right and wrong amidst the lawless chaos of war. When his squad captures a Vietnamese girl to keep as a sex slave, Ericksson's inner turmoil begins to separate him from his squadmates. Amidst the constant gunfire and explosions, Private Ericksson begins to question who the real enemy is. David Rabe wrote the screenplay for this film primarily based on an article written by Daniel Lan for The New York Times. Legendary composer Ennio Morricone (The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) provides the original score for Casualties of War, and Brian De Palma directs this smart action film.
