    Released 1959
Ben-Hur: Collector's Edition is a 2005 enhanced release of the 1959 epic classic based on the book by Lew Wallace. It follows the life of Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston), a Judean prince living in the first century A.D., and his friend Messala (Stephen Boyd), a Roman who eventually becomes his greatest enemy. Seperated from his love Esther (Haya Hayareet), Mother Miriam (Martha Scott), and sister Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell), Ben-Hur is sold into slavery by Messala in order to frighten the Jewish population into submission. But he eventually becomes entangled in another story altogether - the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a fantastic tale of redemption and forgiveness that echoes throughout film history. The special effects and climatic scenes such as the naval battle and ground breaking chariot race are every bit as exciting today as they were in 1959. The Collector's Edition boasts an enhanced film transfer from the restored 65mm originals.moreless

Another Country, a 1984 film based on Julian Mitchell's 1981 play of the same name, is a fictionalized account of the early life of British double-agent Guy Burgess. In the film, Burgess is main character Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett). In the 1930s, Guy is openly homosexual at his all-boys school, and as a result of his nonconformity, his closest friend is Tommy Judd (Colin Firth), whose Marxist opinions also make him an outsider. Guy wants to become a prefect at his school, while Tommy feels that the prefect system is oppressive to the other students. One prefect in particular is Fowler (Tristan Oliver), who uses his high status to abuse and order around other students. Meanwhile, when a professor catches two young boys in a romantic embrace, rumors spread through the school, and one of the boys commits suicide. This fuels Fowler's desire to keep Guy from becoming a prefect. Despite the homophobic attitude of the school, Guy begins a secret relationship with James Harcourt (Cary Elwes). However, in a society where appearances are everything, Guy's two greatest desires have him trapped, and choosing high status means sacrificing personal happiness.moreless

    The Bible

    Released 1966
The Bible is the retelling of the first 22 chapters of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, from acclaimed director John Huston. The primary characters in the story are the couple that begin a pilgrimage which begins the story of Israel finding a homeland, Abraham (George C. Scott) and Sarah (Ava Gardner). Three angels (Peter O'Toole) appear to the elderly couple to tell them that Sarah will in her old age bear a son. This begins the classic story of faith, one in which a barren couple gives birth and then have to put everything on the line for their God. They must leave the land of Ur to go to the land to which God has called them. Along the way, Abraham must make the greatest of sacrifices and give up his son on Mount Moriah. However, God proves himself faithful. The broader narrative includes the story of Adam (Michael Parks) and Eve (Ulla Bergryd), the Tower of Babel, and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah, in which God rains down fire on the sinful cities. This is an epic story of the founding families of the Jewish faith.moreless

    Sebastiane

    Sebastiane

    Released 1976
Sebastiane is a full length motion picture about a group of Roman soldiers who are exiled, and satiate their urges with homosexuality. Loosely based on the life of Roman soldier Sebastian, Sebastiane (Leonardo Treviglio) is a faithful of the Roman army in the 4th century. Along with 8 others, his rank is stripped, and he is banished to a remote, unfamiliar island. Alone amongst themselves, and without any women around, the men turn to one other for comfort and sexual fulfillment. The strong centurion Severus (Barney James) takes a liking in the young Sebastiane, but being Christian, Sebastiane negates the advances, causing him to be outcast from the rest of the colony. As the story develops, he becomes increasingly open to the urging, and the two men find themselves wrestling with other's interest, redefining lust and discovering passion in a story laden with homoeroticism and sexual tension. Paul Humfress' Derek Jarman's vivid depiction of same sex love was quite controversial for its 1976 release, but is as renowned for its stunning imagery as for its polarizing content. With a fantastic score by Brian Eno to boot, Sebastiane is a closet classic and an unforgettable experience.moreless

Director/co-writer Q. Allan Brocka has created a gorgeously textured film that not only explores the recesses of the human heart, but is charged with sex and filled with laughter. Adapted from the outstanding novel by Matthew Rettenmund, Boy Culture is the story of X (Derek Magyar), a high-end prostitute, and his two roommates Andrew (Darryl Stephens) and Joey (Jonathan Trent), who together have created a family for the 21st century. X is the head of the household who brings home the bacon and sets the tone. He has a serious crush on Andrew, who works at a video store and is waiting for the right man...and in Andrew's opinion, a hustler is just not the right man. Joey is a 17-year-old whirlwind of trouble, but there's really only one man he wants: X. The sexual tension between these three men is palpable. X is not your typical hustler; he has only 12 clients and concentrates on making these men happy. When one dies, there's room for a new client and he chooses Gregory (Patrick Bauchau), a rich, lonely man who hasn't left his home in eight years. If, as it is said, the key to making a film work is in the casting, Brocka and his producers deserve kudos for their choices. The four leads are all superb, and extraordinarily natural in their roles. Opening your heart to another person is a risky business, one beautifully told in Boy Culture.moreless

A Single Man is the critically acclaimed film directed by Tom Ford, a fashion designer who also supplied much of the wardrobe. It is the story, brilliantly conceived and executed, of a gay college professor who's lost the love of his life, and how he saves himself and is saved from despair and suicide. Based on Christopher Isherwood's novel about an English professor grieving the loss of his partner of 17 years (a relationship never recognized by the partner's family), this film, set in October 1962, has beautiful period sets, architecture, wardrobe, and lifestyles -- and makes clever use of color and close-ups to tell the story. In a more than Oscar-worthy performance, Colin Firth (The English Patient, Bridget Jones' Diary, The Importance of Being Earnest, Love Actually, Girl With a Pearl Earring) plays George the professor, Matthew Goode (Watchmen, Match Point, The Lookout) his longtime partner, Jim; Julianne Moore (Hannibal, Boogie Nights) plays George's best friend Charley.moreless
