This film tells the historical and psychological story of one of the nine competitors in the first solo non-stop yacht race around the world. The contest was held in 1968 and attracted a field of nine competitors. The competitor featured in this documentary is Donald Crowhurst. At the time of the competition, Crowhurst was a 36-year-old father of four who owned a struggling maritime electronics business. Despite his nautical inexperience, Crowhurst entered the contest because of the cash prize. To increase his odds of winning and despite the fact he could not afford it Crowhurst purchased a trimarin, the quickest boat available at the time. He set sail in the trimarin on October 31, 1968. The directors use Crowhurst original 16mm films, tape recordings and interviews with family and friends to reconstruct his treacherous nine month journey on the sea.moreless
