Caterina in the Big City is a 2003 Italian film directed by Paolo Virzi and starring Alice Teghil, Sergio Castellitto, and Margerita Buy. Caterina Iacovoni (Teghil), a 12-year-old Italian girl, is uprooted from her life in the small town of Montalto di Castro when her father Giancarlo (Castellitto), a teacher, is transferred to Rome. As Caterina becomes friends with her classmates, she learns more about herself than she ever thought possible. Margerhita Rossi-Chaillet becomes her bohemian friend, while Daniela Germano is the more conservative, practical friend. Caterina feels torn between the groups and while at first she becomes best friends with Margerhita, and early falling out has Caterina spending more time with Daniela. Giancarlo, meanwhile, attempts to capitalize on Caterina's friendships by building a connection with their influential parents. As Caterina struggles to find normalcy in a world turn upside-down, she befriends a young Australian boy who lives across the street from her.
