Movie Summary

Director:
Max Ophuls
Released:
1949
Rating:
Caught is the sordid love story of a beautiful model, Leonora Eames (Barbara Bel Geddes), who tries to escape her struggling and meager career by marrying the mysterious millionaire Smith Ohlrig (Robert Ryan). However, Smith's intrigue turns out to have an ugly underside, with sadistic inclinations that soon leave Leonora realizing she is trapped in a dead-end relationship. She can't seem to escape his grasp or the power of his fortune over her, but she finds her way into a small position working for a charitable doctor in a poor neighborhood who turns out to be her sincere love. Things are complicated by an unexpected pregnancy. This 1949 melodrama carries its own intrigue, as director Max Ophuls was rumored to have had a professional falling out with millionaire Howard Hughes, on whom the character of Smith is said to be based. Caught was his subtle revenge and remains a fascinating story of love and loss for viewers today.
