Cause for Alarm! is a twisted 1951 thriller in which paranoia turns into prediction. George (Barry Sullivan) and Ellen Jones (Loretta Young) fell in love and married back in the war when he was a pilot. Now Ellen has functionally become George's nursemaid. George is bedridden with heart problems and on the verge of serious paranoia. One of George's old friends, Lieutenant Ranney Grahame (Bruce Cowling), has returned to serve as a doctor. However, Ranney and Ellen used to be in a romantic relationship together, which provokes George. One day Ellen comes to George's bedside with lunch, and he gives her a large envelope to mail. After she gives it to the postal worker, she returns to find him wielding a gun. He tells her that he knows that she and Ranney have been having an affair and conspiring to keep him sick by overdosing him. He tells her that the letter that she just mailed is actually addressed to a lawyer and describes their mischief. However, in the stress and tension of the moment, George has a heart attack and dies. Now Ellen has precious little time to intercept the letter that might actually mean her undoing.moreless
