Chain of Fools is a 2000 crime comedy directed by Pontus Lowenhielm. In the film, Thomas Kresk (Steve Zahn) is a depressed barber, whose life is quickly falling apart day by day. After attending marriage counseling, his wife left him for the counselor and nothing else seems to go right for him. Due to his hopelessness, Kresk is contemplating suicide. Avnet (Jeff Goldblum) is a thief who has just stolen priceless coins for his boss, billionaire Bollingsworth (Tom Wilkinson). Avnet decides to extort Bollingsworth to receive more money for the coins than they originally agreed upon. Unseen circumstances arise and Thomas becomes entangled in the scheme to blackmail Bollingsworth. Thomas feels he is in danger, so he hires a hitman, Mikey (Elijah Wood), to protect him. What Thomas does not know is that Mikey is an emotionally disturbed 17 year-old orphan. Soon the police begin investigating and Thomas is smitten with the lead detective, Sgt. Meredith Kolko (Salma Hayek). Will Thomas survive the ordeal without going to jail, or will he get his wish and end up killing himself?
