Champion is a 2005 documentary film directed by Joe Eckhardt which chronicles the controversial and intense life of character actor Danny Trejo. Danny has made his career off of playing thugs, hitmen, and criminal lords, but few know that before he began acting, he faced a very troubled upbringing. He was raised in a typical poor Mexican household that constantly faced financial hardship. At the age of 12 he had his first taste of heroin with his Uncle Gilbert that later transformed into a severe addiction. Armed robberies and a gangster lifestyle lead Danny and his friends to problems with the authorities. He received a large sentence which he served in San Quentin prison, located in California. He got a second chance at life after he is enrolled in a program that helps inmates overcome their drug addictions. His passion for boxing is what kept him afloat during harsh times in prison. His love of life, along with his determination to stay clean, helped shape him into the successful actor he is today.moreless
