Che! is a 1969 biopic centered around the life of Cuba's most infamous revolutionary - Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Unlike other films which depict the entire life of Guevara, Che! follows the anarchist during his most prolific times, beginning with his arrival in Cuba in 1957 and ending with his death in Bolivia in 1967. The film was directed by film noir expert Richard Fleischer (Tora! Tora! Tora!, Conan the Destroyer, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) who judiciously cast Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago, Funny Girl) as Guevara and Jack Palance (Batman, Shane) as Fidel Castro. The film opens with Guevara as a young doctor working in Argentina. He is recruited to fight in the guerilla war, where he more than surpasses everyone's expectations of his ability to lead large groups of men into battle. His charisma and skill catches the eye of Castro himself, who recruits him as chief advisor. Che then goes on to lead a pivotal role in the insurgence against Batista, and later attempts to foment rebellion on a larger scale in Bolivia. Critic Paul Brenner praised Shariff and Palance for their ground-breaking performances as Cuba's most influential figures. Que viva la revoluci'n!
