Checking Out is a 1989 comedy that follows Ray Macklin (Jeff Daniels), a typical working American. He carries on a relatively comfortable lifestyle with his family in the suburbs. After the sudden and unexpected death of his closest friend, Ray becomes obsessed with the notion that he will surely suffer a similar fate in the near future. Tormented by a newfound acceptance of the fragility of life, he begins to break down mentally from the anxiety. While his assumptions are most likely far from the truth, he can't help but feel the cold hand of death on his shoulder wherever he goes. His recent hypochondria causes Ray to alienate himself from his family and friends in a most hilarious manner. With the encouragement of those closest to him, he must come to terms with the false apprehensions that he harbors in relation to his health. Checking Out was directed by David Leland, and written by Joe Eszterhas.
