Checking Out is a dark comedy in which the aging, former stage actor Morris Applebaum (Peter Falk) has decided that his time on this earth has come to an end. He invites his children (played by Laura San Giacomo, David Paymer, and Judge Rhinehold) to come and visit him and, in good spirits, announces his imminent suicide. After receiving the expected protests in good humor, Applebaum denies them any chance of changing his mind and makes a clever escape to bid a final farewell to this life that has given him so much. An amusing and energetic chase around Manhattan ensues as Applebaum's children do what ever they can to prevent his death. But is he serious about killing himself or are there other motives at play? Based on the play by Allen Swift and directed by Jeff Hare, Checking Out generated awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.
