Cheers For Miss Bishop is a 1941 drama based on the novel Miss Bishop by Bess Streeter Aldrich. The film uses flashbacks that span from the 1880s to the 1930s and tell the life story of Ella Bishop (Martha Scott). Ella graduated from Midwestern College and then with the support of the college president, Professor Corcoran (Edmund Gwenn), she stays on as a professor for the next fifty years. At Ella's retirement party, she recounts a life filled with failed romances, poor choices, missed opportunities and why she never married. Earlier in her adult life, she had her heart broke by Delbert Thompson (Donald Douglas), a man who fathered a child with her cousin, Amy (Mary Anderson), and left Ella to raise the child, Hope (Marsha Hunt), on her own. While she is bearing her soul to a roomful of students, she is visited by several of her now famous or successful students who remind her of the gifts that she gave them.moreless
