Chicken Run is a 2000 British-American stop-motion animation film from the Aardman Animations Studios, the production studio of the Oscar-winning Wallace and Grommit films. Directed by Peter Lord and Nick Park, Chicken Run tells the story of a band of chickens in 1959 Yorkshire, England who have to find a way to escape their farm when the farmowners decide to make the switch from selling chicken eggs to selling chicken pies. Rhode Island Red rooster Rocky Rhodes seems to be the only one who can save them. When Rocky injures himself in what appears to be a less-than-successful attempt at flight, but is, in reality, the result of an explosion, the rest of the coop turns to him for flying lessons. Will these chickens be able to pull it off, or will they chicken out instead? Chicken Run is eighty-four minutes of clucking good fun!

Metacritic Score

  • 90

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Doesn't try to cram messages of uplift down its audience's gullet. It's a great eggscape from banality.

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Never loses its priceless stamp of individuality. Reduced to its essence, this is a joke told by a person, not a corporation--and that makes all the difference.

  • 90

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Technically superb and witty in an old-fashioned, veddy British way that will delight many adults but will sail over the heads of young audiences.
