Chinese Box is a 1998 film about a man living in Hong Kong just prior to the British government's turnover of Taiwan to China in 1997. John (Jeremy Irons) has lived in Taiwan for many years. Despite this, he often still feels like a stranger in his adopted home. He is in love with Vivian (Gong Li), a woman who was once a prostitute and now runs John's favorite bar. Her engagement to Chang (Michael Hui), however, ruins any hope that John has of ever becoming involved with her. Just as he comes to this realization, John learns that he is dying from leukemia. Knowing that Taiwan is scheduled to be returned to China in six months and fearful that he will not live that long, John quits his job and begins wandering through the city. One day, he meets a young woman named Jean (Maggie Cheung), and the two become fast friends. What he does not realize, though, is that Jean holds a secret that will deeply affect what little time John has left.moreless
