Choke follows con man Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell), a Colonial America reenacter who is also a recovering sex addict. In an attempt to pay for his ailing mother's hospital stay, Mancini goes to restaurants and purposefully chokes on food to obtain money. As his mother's condition worsens, Mancini is convinced by a woman caring for his mother that stem cells from a baby's umbilical cord might hold the cure. As she continues to tell him it must be a baby with his genes, she offers herself as a willing sexual partner. During the course of the film, Mancini also attempts to learn about his father, whom he has never met. The only person who knows anything about him, however, is his mother, who doesn't recognize him. He and his friends find a diary, which they believe holds the answer to Mancini's questions about his paternity. Can Mancini make enough money to care for his mother, cure his mother, and find his father? Or is the truth too much to handle?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

The New York Times Stephen Holden

It adds up to an entertaining collection of vignettes strung together by a sarcastic loudmouth whose heart is breaking under his sophomoric bravado.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times

As the story of a wallowing pig, Choke is often pretty entertaining, but when it comes to where-do-I-come-from poignancy, it can't always keep from gagging.

  • 40

    Variety Dennis Harvey

Palahniuk's antic absurdism is duly present, but the hurtling pace and barely-underlying nihilism that transferred to screen so vividly in "Fight Club" aren't much in evidence here.
