Chrystal is a 2004 dramatic film directed by Ray McKinnon. Taking place in the Ozark mountains of Arkansas, the film tells the story of Chrystal (Lisa Blount). She is the wife of Joe (Billy Bob Thornton), but the two have grown distant after a car crash many years ago. Joe, with Chrystal and their son in the car, was fleeing from police at high speeds. He lost control of the vehicle, and it smashed into a tree, killing their son. Joe had been smuggling drugs in the car, and he was sentenced to 16 years in jail for various crimes. Upon his release, Joe discovers Chrystal has been selling her body to local men just to make ends meet. He tries to talk to her, but Chrystal is still upset about the car crash and the loss of their son. Joe must try to atone for his sins and reconnect with his wife.

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    The Hollywood Reporter

A grand story of redemption, laced with barbecued wit and slopped with intrigue, Chrystal is a high heaping of brilliant storytelling.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Chrystal unravels a bit toward the end as it becomes more fable-like, but the performances make it worthwhile.

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Respectable piece of work is reasonably involving if not compelling.
