Chutney Popcorn is a lesbian-themed drama centered around an American Indian woman who grapples with homosexual curiosities and identity issues. The film was written and directed by Nisha Ganatra (Cosmopolitan) in 1999. Reena (Nisha Ganatra) has always been a kind and giving sister and daughter. When she learns that her newly wed sister Sarita (Saskina Jaffrey) is unable to conceive, she offers to bare a child herself as a surrogate mother. Her girlfriend Lisa (Jill Hennessy), however, cautions against her eager desire to help her sister. Reena struggles to make a decision regarding her sister's misfortune while carefully hiding her girlfriend from her mother. The film craftily delves into the intricacies within each familial relationship - driving home the point that within each family lies secrets, issues, and insecurities. Chutney Popcorn is an excellent family drama that doesn't over exaggerate with a glossy finish. A great film for all those that enjoy analyzing relationships.moreless
