Cinderella aired in 1957 when TV specials were truly a widely- watched event. With songwriters Rodgers and Hammerstein and star-in-the-making Julie Andrews, this is truly an entertainment milestone! Cinderella (Julie Andrews), directed by Ralph Nelson, was one of the most celebrated musicals written for television, and was considered a classic. The cast includes the stepmother (Ilka Chase), the fairy godmother (Edie Adams), and former Broadway stars as the king and queen (Howard Lindsay and Dorothy Stickney). The prince (John Cypher) and the stepsisters (comedians Alice Ghostley and Kaye Ballard) also star in the movie. Julie Andrews is dignified as Cinderella and her lovely voice and star quality carry her through the film. The stepmother and the stepsisters come off as more silly than wicked so not to scare a young audience. It seems this version was written more as a modern take on the fairy tale. Make sure to check out the extras, including a documentary with Andrews, Cypher, Adams and Ballard discussing the making of the production.moreless
