Cinderella Liberty is a 1973 romance drama by director Mark Rydell, based on the novel by Darryl Ponicsan. The movie is about Maggie Paul (Marsha Mason), a 32 year old prostitute with a bit of a weakness for alcohol, a bit of trouble keeping a man, and a bit of a challenge raising her ten year old son, Doug (Kirk Calloway). She is about as far from an admirable, straight laced lifestyle as one can get. So it surprises everyone when a Navy sailor, John Baggs Jr., takes an interest in her. He is lonely and, despite their opposite lifestyles, feels an attraction to her. So much, in fact, that he steps in and becomes a surrogate father figure for her pre-teen son. The movie is a touching romance about the finding love in the most unexpected places and it received great critical acclaim for its success in carrying out the theme. Cinderella Liberty was nominated for three 1974 Oscar Awards, one 1974 Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) Award, and four 1974 Golden Globe Awards, winning an additional 1974 Golden Globe Award.moreless
