Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is a 2009 horror-adventure film about two teenagers who are drawn into an ancient rivalry between warring vampire clans. Darren Shan (Chris Massoglia) and Steve Leonard (Josh Hutcherson) sneak out of their houses to visit a traveling underground freak show, where the acts feature vampires and a highly poisonous spider named Madam Octa. Darren, who has a fondness for spiders, decides to steal Madam Octa and sneaks backstage, where he overhears Steve asking performer Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) to turn him into a vampire. When Crepsley refuses, Steve vows revenge. After Madam Octa bites Steve and Darren begs Crepsley for help, Crepsley agrees to cure Steve -- but only if Darren becomes a vampire and takes a job as Crepsley's assistant. However, rival vampire Mr. Tiny (Michael Cerveris) is looking for an assistant of his own, and soon Darren and Steve find themselves on opposite sides of a dangerous feud.

Cirque is a harmless bit of fluff with a very cool look, but there's just never enough bite.

The Vampire's Assistant is too busy making impossible claims about just how spectacular its sequels will be to serve up a self-contained story with a satisfying finale.
