Citizen Ruth is the acclaimed 1996 satire from award nominated and celebrated dramedy filmmaking team Alexander Taylor and Jim Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election). Ruth Stoops (Laura Dern, Jurassic Park, Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose), a 'huffer,' and drug addict, having been arrested for substance abuse sixteen times in the past year, is charged with child endangerment. The twist: the child she is endangering has not been born yet; it is still a fetus. The solution to her problem: if she gets an abortion, the charges will be dropped. This sparks controversy among pro-life and pro-choice activists, who seem to care about Rut, but ultimately only care about Ruth's choice. She is taken in by a Christian family, but after offending them in more ways than one, makes her way to a farmhouse occupied by pro-choice gay women, who are determined for her to have an abortion and send a 'message' to women all over the country.
