City of Joy is a 1992 drama following the fortunes and intersecting lives of two men living in Calcutta, India. Max (Patrick Swayze) is an American surgeon who emigrated to Calcutta to disappear in the sea of people after growing dissatisfied in his life and profession in Houston. Eventually, after being beaten during a heavy night of drinking, Max wakes up in the City of Joy Self-Help Dispensary, a busy medical clinic for the poor. Joan Bethel (Pauline Collins) is an Irish woman who runs the clinic for the poor and convinces Max to donate his services there. Meanwhile, Hasai (Om Puri) is a hard working man, originally from a poverty-stricken Indian village, who survives in Calcutta as a rickshaw driver. Max is inspired by Hasai's indomitable spirit but when Hasai's rickshaw is stolen, it puts the lives of his entire family in jeopardy. City of Joy is directed by Roland Joffe and is based on a book by Dominique Lapierre.
