Claire Dolan is a 1998 American-French drama film by Director Lodge Kerrigan. The protagonist, Claire Dolan (Katrin Cartlidge), is an Irish immigrant who works as a high-end Manhattan call girl to pay off a debt she owes to her pimp, Roland Cain (Colm Meaney). But when her mother dies, Claire tries to leave New York City, and prostitution, behind. She moves to Newark, where she works as a manicurist and falls in love with taxi driver Elton Garrett (Vincent D’Onofrio). Unfortunately for Claire, just as she is settling into her new, honest lifestyle and a real relationship with Elton, even considering having children, Cain tracks her down and insists on full repayment of the debt she owes him. She returns to Manhattan, to continue work at her higher-paying job as a prostitute for the wealthy, but Elton follows her. Can he save her from an unsavory lifestyle and can she leave it behind for motherhood? Claire Dolan won the 1998 Georges Delerue Prize and was nominated for four others.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 88

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

If a movie like this had a neat ending, the ending would be a lie. We do not want answers, but questions and observations.

  • 73

    Mr. Showbiz Michael Atkinson

A thoughtful, stunning piece of work in what, of late, has been an otherwise arid indie landscape.

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Cartlidge's beautifully still performance, mournful one moment, defiant the next, lets you see into Claire's soul without editorializing or begging for our empathy.
