Clara's Heart is a 1988 film starring Whoopie Goldberg, Michael Ontkean and Kathleen Quinlan. The film is based on the novel written by Joseph Olshan. When Leona (Kathleen Quinlan) and Bill (Michael Ontkean) lose their infant daughter, Leona escapes to Jamaica for some personal healing. There she meets a hotel housekeeper, Clara Mayfield (Whoopie Goldberg), who recognizes with an almost sixth sense that Leona is facing a difficult loss. Clara helps the grieving mother with a no-nonsense yet compassionate, care-taking style. Leona decides to bring Clara back to Baltimore as her housekeeper and nanny. Clara immediately begins to manage the house. Leona and Bill's son, David (Neil Patrick Harris), does not accept Clara and sees her as an intruder in the house. With their failing marriage and ongoing grieving, David's parents are completely self-absorbed and disengage from David. David and Clara grow closer, but so does a secret from Clara's past.
