Rating:

Clerks is a 1994 comedy starring Brian O'Halloran as Dante Hicks and Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves. Clerks is the first film by director Kevin Smith and the first to feature his signature characters Jay and Silent Bob played by Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith himself. Clerks tells the store of two employees of a New Jersey convenience store and video store. Dante and Randal discuss pop culture with a wide variety of people who enter their stores. Dante (who isn't even supposed to be there that day) finds out that his old love, Caitlin (Lisa Spoonhauer) is getting married. Dante is shocked at this news as he and Caitlin have been speaking frequently as of late. Dante's obsession over Caitlin leads his current girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti) to break up with him. The day is filled with strange happenings including a hockey game on the roof, a trip to a wake, a death in the store, and a lot more. All the while, the perpetually stoned Jay and Silent Bob are causing trouble either inside or outside of the stores. Clerks was very well received and won multiple awards at Cannes and Sundance. It also began the career of Kevin Smith who continued to set his films in the same universe as Clerks, as well as fill them with his signature style and unique voice.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety Todd McCarthy

A randy, irreverent, slice-of-life no-budgeter that's played for laughs and gets them.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Within the limitations of his bare-bones production, Smith shows great invention, a natural feel for human comedy, and a knack for writing weird, sometimes brilliant, dialogue.

  • 70

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

[Smith] also has an uncommonly sure sense of deadpan comic timing. [25 Mar 1994, p.C10]

The View Askewniverse is one of the best comedy film series around. The first film Clerks, was the vision of Kevin Smith who maxed out credit cards and even sold his comic book collection to see it through.

The film is about Dante Hicks who has to work at Quickstop Groceries on his day off. He interacts with his best friend Randal Grave who works at RST Video and often messes with customers. And of course this film introduces Jay and Silent Bob, one of the greatest comedy duos around.

Over the course of the film, Dante has to deal with a chewing gum representative making an anti-smoking campaign, playing hockey on the roof, going to an ex-girlfriend's funeral, dealing with annoying customers, dealing with his ex-girlfriend Caitlin Bree getting married to an Asian design major, and his feelings for his current girlfriend, which ends with Caitlin accidentally having sex with a dead man and his girlfriend dumping him.moreless
