Rating:

Climates is a 2006 Turkish film brought to you by contemporary 'high art' filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Distant, Clouds of May, Cocoon). His movies are known for their intimate study of character. Climates is much like Ceylan's other movies in that he closely examines a Turkish couple, Isa (Nuri Bilge Ceylan) and Bahar (Ebru Ceylan), whose affection for one another progressively disintegrates. Tensions rise as Isa, a college professor, and Bahar, a television producer, vacation at the beach one afternoon. As Bahar wades in the water, Isa prepares a break-up speech. When Bahar returns from the water, Isa tells her he does not want to be with her anymore, and the couple return to the city and go their separate ways. Both deal with the break up in different ways - Isa engages in dubious activity with other women. As Isa and Bahar spend time apart they are plagued by thoughts of possibly rekindling the love they once shared. Climates was nominated for the Palm d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI award at the same event. This film is for those who love rich, thought-provoking character studies.moreless

  • 80

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

This film paints a haunting portrait of existential solitude, one in which the images speak louder and often more forcefully than do any of the words.

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

An intimate drama that views the deterioration of a relationship from the inside out. Moving from summer through fall and concluding in winter, it's minimalist cinema that turns on...

    Variety Derek Elley

Immaculately shot and composed as always, and moving at Ceylan's usual measured pace, this one is slightly enlivened by more likable perfs and a trim 98-minute running time.
