Cloverfield is a cinema verite style giant monster movie from gaining legendary status producer J. J. Abrams (Lost, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible III). Told entirely from the point of view of a party goer's consumer video camera footage, the story concerns the tragedy that befalls a going away party in progress in New York City. Lily, her fianc' Jason, and cameraman Hud are throwing a surprise going away party for Jason's brother Rob, who is moving to Japan to become vice president of a major corporation. Hud has been charged with gathering video testimonials from everybody a la a wedding for Rob to take with him. Rob is going through a dilemma, as he recently slept with the girl he's been carrying a torch for for years ' the stunning Beth ' and is distraught when she brings another guy to the party. He can't help but feel responsible, as he didn't call her since their tryst and his attitude drives her off from the party. This is all throw into sharp relief when a giant monster attacks the city, Jason is killed and the group, led by Rob, resolves to go rescue an injured Beth-in-distress despite the evacuation of the city and the monster's rampage.moreless
