Code of the Prairie, a film produced by Republic Pictures in 1944, is a black and white cinematic classic set in a Texas settlement. This action-packed and comedy-filled Western tells the story of Sunset Carson (Sunset Carson) and his photographer buddy Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette), whose lives are turned upside-down by a band of outlaws. Former Marshal Bat Matson (Tom Chatterton) comes into town with his feisty daughter Helen (Peggy Stewart). Bat discovers a wanted poster describing the crimes of someone named David Larson. The town barber, Professor Graham (Roy Barcroft), is really David Larson, a gang leader who has been leading double lives. When Bat realizes the truth, he decides to meet with Professor Graham and let him know. Professor Graham, to cover his tracks and keep his outlaw identity hidden, murders former Marshal Matson in the barber shop. While Graham is disposing of the body, Frog unwittingly captures photographic evidence. The movie follows Carson, Frog, and Carson's faithful mount, Cactus, on their adventures, which are often full of hilarious mishaps and foolishness, as they attempt to stop Professor Graham's secret plot of town-wide dominance.moreless
