Coffee & Cigarettes is a 2003 film directed by Jim Jarmusch that features 11 short vignettes with the thread of coffee and cigarettes tying them together. The first short features Steven Wright and Roberto Benini conversing on all matters coffee and cigarettes. Joie Lee and Cinqu' Lee star in the second short as twins to whom Steve Buscemi, portraying a waiter, speaks about Elvis Presley. The third features rock stars Iggy Pop and Tom Waits smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee together while speaking about their recent quitting of smoking. Another short features rock band The White Stripes speaking of inventor Nikola Tesla and using a Tesla Coil. In another, RZA and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan speak to Bill Murray about caffeine while he is working a secret life as a waiter. After watching the film as a whole, the themes become apparent and the seemingly unrelated vignettes tie together as a cohesive whole.

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Manohla Dargis

Known for an elegant visual style, Jarmusch has a great gift for playing actors against one another, for finding complementary eccentrics (Murray and RZA) and uncovering rare gems ...

The New York Times Dana Stevens

The implication that beauty and meaning can be found in odd places at unlikely, idle moments resonates through this lovely film.

    Variety Deborah Young

Holding the film together are simple but strong B&W visuals of offbeat types sitting around a table smoking and drinking java while they talk.
