Cole Younger, Gunfighter is a 1958 Western starring Frank Lovejoy as the titular desperado in postbellum Texas. The story centers on one young man, Kit (James Best), caught on the bad side of a corrupt Texas state government. Fed up with a carpet-bagging governor and a predominantly Northern police force, Kit leads a small group of his peers in a heated demonstration. The event makes Kit a target for police violence. When he escapes from custody he is left branded as an outlaw. Newly on the lam, he teams up with Cole Younger with the plan in mind to turn the high-profile criminal into the authorities. In time, however, the two form a close bond and Kit relies on Younger to help him clear his name. Set amidst the instability of the South after the Civil War, the film speaks about the dangers of an overbearing government and the persecution of Americans with independent spirits.
