Coming Out is a 1989 German drama about one man's struggle with his sexual identity during the tumultuous times of 1980 East Berlin. The political and social pressures of 1980s Berlin were difficult for everyone, as the socialist German government ruled the city with an iron fist. For one man, the city's political turmoil becomes particularly obstructive when he realizes he has feelings for another man. Philipp Klahrmann is a young high-school teacher who has just begun a promising relationship with a woman who also works at the school. Tanja and Philipp seem to be a perfect match, but when Philipp meets the handsome young Matthias he begins to doubt his sexual orientation. This film is noted for its historical significance in several ways. For one, it remains the only film about homosexuality made in East Berlin. Also, the film premiered in East Berlin on the same night in 1989 that the Berlin Wall was finally brought down. Coming Out is a gripping film about a man who acknowledges his changing sexuality during the oppressive times of late 80s East Berlin.moreless
