Conrack

Movie Summary

Director:
Martin Ritt
Released:
1974
Rating:
PG
Conrack is a riveting tale of a teacher, Pat Conroy (Jon Voight), who is assigned to instruct students at a grade school in a remote area of South Carolina. Much to his dismay, he finds that the students he is meant to teach, mostly coming from lives of poverty and low-income families, are barely even literate and know little of the world in which they live. This inspirational film follows the class as Pat Conroy makes an attempt to educate students with his own style of unorthodox education. As is expected, his method comes under scrutiny from many of his superiors and members of the community, predominantly the school's principal Mrs. Scott (Madge Sinclair) and the district superintendent Mr. Skeffington (Hume Cronyn). He must fight to prove that his ways are indeed effective, but more importantly, that his students are not irremediable. Other cast and characters include Mary (Tina Andrews), Mrs. Sellers (Gracia Lee) and Mr. Spaulding (Robert W. Page).
