Convicts, also known as Horton Foote's Convicts, is a 1991 drama directed by Peter Masterson. The movie is set in rural Texas during 1902. In the film, Horace Robedaux (Lukas Haas) is a 13-year-old boy who lost his father one year ago. At the time of his father's death his family had no money to buy a tombstone. Horace hated not having a marker for his father's grave and promised himself he would get a tombstone someday. He thought he found a perfect way to earn the money by working for Soll Gautier (Robert DuVall) on a plantation only until he can earn enough money to make the purchase. Soll Gautier is a senile Confederate plantation owner who hires convicts to work on his plantation. After six months of hard labor, Horace has not received a penny of the money he has earned. The terrible working conditions, dangerous co-workers and unstable boss make it unclear if Horace will ever earn enough money to get his father's tombstone.moreless
