Cookie's Fortune:Special Edition paints a portrait of southern life in a small town filled with big characters. When bored widow "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) decides to end her life at gun point, the plot takes off as everyone in the town takes an interest in the huge fortune she leaves behind. Two estranged nieces show up to scheme on how to get their hands on the estate, one a pretentious playwright (Glenn Close) and the other an oddball recluse (Julianne Moore), and try to maintain the good southern name of their aunt by claiming murder and foul play in her death. Cookie's handyman Friday (Charles Dutton) becomes the main suspect of the supposed crime, but is also sleuthing on his own time with Cookie's grandniece (Liv Tyler) to uncover the secret behind the origin of Cookie's fortune. Set in the bucolic rural town of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Cookie's Fortune is director Robert Altman at his best.
