Cookie's Fortune is a comedy film that follows the events that occur because of one woman's death. Jewel-Mae "Cookie" Orcutt (Patricia Neal) is a widow who sis ick of her lonely life. She decides it would be best to kill herself, using her late husband's pistol. Her body is found by her niece, Camille (Glenn Close) and Camille's younger sister, Cora (Julianne Moore). At first the women are shocked, but once the shock wears off, they realize they want to protect the family name and keep the family mansion, so they decide to stage Cookie's suicide as a murder. Cookie's handyman, Willis (Charles S. Dutton), becomes the main suspect in the apparent murder, due to the fact that he cleaned the pistol off that Cookie used to kill herself the night before her death.
