Cool World is a live action and animation film which focuses on Jack Deebs (Brad Pitt), a cartoonist, who was recently released from jail. During his sentence, he creates the comic "Cool World," a landscape filled with violence and twisted characters. Jack travels to his comic strip's world and encounters his femme fatal, Holli Would (Kim Basinger). In "Cool World" there are doodles, the animated residents, and there are noids, humans who have been transported into Cool World. Frank Harris (Gabriel Byrne) is a detective noid in Cool World. He keeps an eye on Jack, informs him of all the rules, and warns him about Holli. Holli successfully seduces Jack and convinces him to take her to the real world. She informs him of the legendary "Spike of Power," which transported a doodle into the real world long ago. Hoping to enter the real world as a human, Holli sets off for the Spike. Will she succeed?

Metacritic Score

  • 30

The New York Times Janet Maslin

The plot of Michael Grais's and Mark Victor's screenplay is even more nonsensical than it needs to be. [11 Jul 1992]

  • 25

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

Cool World is a seriously troubled film, so ragged I doubt if even the director can explain the story line.

  • 10

    Variety Brian Lowry

Style has seldom pummeled substance as severely as in Cool World, a combination funhouse ride/acid trip that will prove an ordeal for most visitors in the form of trial by animation.
