Corpse Bride is a 2005 musical animated fantasy film, directed by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson, and starring the voice talents of Johnny Depp, Emily Watson, and Helena Bonham Carter. Set in a Victorian village in the late 1800s, this dark romance is about a nervous young man, Victor Van Dort (Johnny Depp), who is due to marry the beautiful Victoria Everglot (Emily Watson), in an arranged marriage to restore her family’s wealth and bring his family social status. When the two fall in love upon their first meeting, it seems as though the wedding will be a happy ending for all. That is, until Victor botches his vows at the wedding rehearsal and Pastor Galswells (Christopher Lee), sends him off to learn his vows. Victor wanders through the forest practicing and practicing until he finally gets them right. But as soon as he does, Emily (Helena Bonham Carter), the vengeful corpse bride, declares him as her husband. From there, a sticky love triangle, which turns into a jumbled love square, ensues. Corpse Bride received excellent critical reviews, earning the honor of an Oscar nomination, as well as fifteen additional nominations and five additional wins.moreless

    Variety Justin Chang

An endearingly schizoid Frankenstein of a movie, by turns relentlessly high-spirited and darkly poignant.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Corpse Bride has more warmth and appeal than its title would indicate, but it is finally more grotesque than good-humored. And, even at 75 minutes, it feels longer than its content...
