Courage to Love tells the story of Henriette Delille (Vanessa Williams), a mixed-race creole woman living in mid-19th century New Orleans before the abolition of slavery. By the mores of the time Delille is expected to become the mistress of a wealthy white man, as did her mother and sister. But having seen her mother abandoned by her father, who left her for a white woman, Delille is determined to fight against these expectations, decide her own path in life, and help her community. She instead works to create a school and medical clinic. Pursued by successful French doctor, Gerard Gaultier (Gil Bellows), she rebels against the narrow constraints of social expectation and the stereotypes of both the rich white community and her own family to do good for the city's deprived black underclass. Vanessa Williams also produces, with Kari Skogland directing from a script written by Heather Hale and Toni Ann Johnson.
