Cradle Will Rock is a 1999 drama about American life during the 1930s. Directed by Tim Robbins, the story is based on real events. Playwright Marc Blitzstein (Hank Azaria) is hard at work on a new musical. He feels sure that it will change everything about contemporay theater and have an impact on society as well. Blitzstein is frustrated by the socioeconomic divide he views during the 1930s, with some people living lives of carefree, decadent wealth and luxury and others struggling for even the basic necessities of life. His new musical is called The Cradle Will Rock and will highlight corporate greed and corruption. Blitzstein even manages to recruit Orson Welles (Angus Macfadyen) as the director. As Blitzstein comes close to realizing his dream, however, the WPA and House Committee on Un-American Activities begin to interfere with the musical's production. The struggle between censorship and freedom of speech reaches a head as Blitzstein struggles to share his message with the audience.moreless
