Crime and Punishment is director Menahem Golan's modern day retelling of Dostoevsky's literary masterpiece. In post-Soviet Moscow, high-class law student Rodion Romanovich Raskalnikov (Crispin Glover) cold-bloodedly murders and robs innocent pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna (Patricia Hayes) with no motive outside of an idea that he can ignore all law. Shortly after the murder, Raskalnikov's conscience begins to eat at him and he becomes locked in a battle with himself over whether to confess or keep his dark deed a secret. Meanwhile, the chief investigator of Ivanovna's death, Porfiry (John Hurt), meets Raskalnikov and begins to suspect him of the murder based solely on Raskalnikov's psychological state. Although Porfiry has no physical proof or eyewitness testimony linking Raskalnikov to the crime, he becomes certain of Raskalnikov's guilt and hellbent on proving it. With mounting pressure from the police, his family, and his own conscience, Raskalnikov has to come to grips with what he has done and decide what to do next in order to relieve his guilt.moreless
