Critical Care spoofs the complicated world of modern medicine governed by the realities of insurance and high-priced procedures. Dr. Werner Ernst (James Spader) is a young doctor trying to make his way in the industry. His alcoholic supervisor, Dr. Butz (Albert Brooks), advises him to only take care of patients who have insurance. Butz meanwhile carries no insurance of his own, because he's seen how the medical world works from the inside. He says you're only truly a doctor when you spend all of your time fighting with lawyers. In this context, Ernst finds himself trapped between two half-sisters, Felicia (Kyra Sedgwick) and Constance Potter (Margo Martindale), who are battling over what to do about their father who is in a coma. It quickly becomes clear to Ernst that at the heart of their fight is their father's $10 million dollar estate. Medical ethics start to go out the window as Ernst finds himself falling for Felicia, which only gets him in more trouble, as her seduction guides his prescriptions. Ernst may turn out to be the moral center of a corrupt world, or he may just be one more victim of it.moreless
