Crossover Dreams is a 1985 film directed by Leon Ichaso and starring Ruben Blades as Rudy Veloz. Rudy is a professional salsa singer whose career is just about to take off. He lands a record contract and begins to push over anyone that stands in his way of commercial success. With stars in his eyes, Rudy abandons his musical style and cultural roots in hopes of achieving great fame. He idolizes Julio Iglesias and puts together a band consisting of musicians that specialize in a variety of styles, hoping to achieve broad appeal. Cheo Bablu (Virgilio Marti), his mentor, warns him that the music he is making lacks depth and has no cultural relevance, but Rudy ignores him. When Rudy has a hit single, success goes to head and he leaves his longtime girlfriend Liz (Elizabeth Pena) and his manager Ray (Frank Robles). When he is unable to write another hit, Rudy's career falters and he is left with few friends. Despite the heavy subject matter, the film is a light-hearted comedy.moreless
