Once a British army officer in North Africa, now a mercenary for hire, Robert Dapes arrives in Cuba to advise the Batista government about fighting Fidel Castro's revolutionaries. But, almost as soon as he arrives, Dapes knows that it is too late, that the inadequately-trained, brutish and corrupt government troops are fighting a hopeless battle against the well-organized and popular rebel forces. Dapes also meets, for the first time in 15 years, the Cuban girl he loved to distraction in North Africa, who is now the wife of a feckless playboy, and who claims to have forgotten him.

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • This film was always planned as a star vehicle for Sean Connery, with whom director Richard Lester had worked very amicably on "Robin And Marian". However, the filming of "Cuba" (made entirely on location in Spain) was tremendously difficult, with the Spanish army withdrawing the majority of the troops it had originally agreed to lend to the film as extras and also withdrawing a great deal of equipment. Connery and Lester quarrelled constantly during filming and finally stopped speaking to each other. The film was an expensive box-office flop.

    • NOTES (1)

      • There is a major howler right at the start of the film, when a caption sets the scene as "Havana, 1959"; the setting is indeed Havana, but the year in which the story is set is 1958, as it covers the last few weeks of the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and ends with the rebel army of Fidel Castro seizing control of the city, an event which occurred on the morning of January 1st, 1959.
