Cyrano de Bergerac is a romantic play captured by PBS directly from the stage based on Edmond Rostand's play of the same name that centers on Hercule Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac (Kevin Kline), a nobleman and soldier with many talents, except his insecurity about his "ugliness" in the form of his extremely large nose prevents him from revealing his true feelings to the beautiful Roxanne (Jennifer Garner). It seems though that Roxanne has fallen in love with the young and handsome soldier Christian (Daniel Sunjata). When Cyrano meets Christian, he bites back his own love in order to help the dimwitted and hopeless younger man woo the lady, even writing letters for him and creating speeches to call to her from the balcony. An ironic romantic play, Cyrano de Bergerac is a heartbreaking tale of a strong man unable to truly have his love in the end.
