Dan In Real Life is a 2007 romantic comedy starring Steve Carell as a widower trying to find love again. Since he lost his wife, advice columnist Dan Burns (Steve Carell) has only focused on his relationships with his three daughters and the problems of his readers. On a visit to see his parents, Nana (Dianne Wiest) and Poppy (John Mahoney), Dan meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) at a bookstore and uncharacteristically asks for her number while posing as a store clerk. The flustered Marie explains that she just began a new relationship and rushes off. Much to Dan's surprise, when he arrives at his parents' house, his brother Mitch (Dane Cook) introduces Marie as his new girlfriend. Marie and Dan agree to keep their bookstore encounter a secret over the family weekend, in spite of Dan's increasingly odd behavior. When Nana invites Dan's high school acquaintance Ruthie (Emily Blunt) over as a potential love interest, the situation goes from difficult to completely awkward.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Dan offers the most pleasing kind of unforced charm as it uses a terrific plot device to examine the conflicts between family and romance as well as the joy and pain of being in love.

  • 80

    Variety Joe Leydon

Deftly interlaces heart and humor in a witty, warm and well-observed comedy about the unexpected and inconvenient blooming of romance at the weekend gathering of an extended family.

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Dan in Real Life is neither wildly farcical nor mockingly cruel, but rather, for the most part, winningly gentle and observant.
