The co-creator of the Cuban classical ballet style and the choreographer of Carmen Suite is 90 years old, healthy and vibrant. Still working every day at a community college in north Florida, he now teaches kids how to dance with the same passion and professionalism he used all his life with some of the most important ballet dancers of the 20th century. This film is an intimate introduction to the artist and choreographer Alberto Alonso creator of the Cuban classical ballet style. Dance of My Heart chronicles his extraordinary contributions to the world of dance, from his earlier work with the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo, Ballet National de Cuba, the Bolshoi Theatre, and many other national ballet companies, to the resurrection of his choreographic career when in 1993 he left Cuba and moved to the United States at the age of 76. Alberto's employment at a community college in North Florida in 1993 began an incredible journey of rebirth and renewal as he continues his life's work of creating his own unique style of dance. Alberto's own Cuban style is as evident in each of his new creations, as it is in his seminal piece, Carmen Suite. As if to prove his relevance both to the past and the present, during the making of this film Alberto was invited to re-stage "Carmen" at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow for the prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya's 80th birthday. Carmen was one of three ballets requested by Maya, proving the immense historical as well as artistic relevance of Alberto's work. All of this is accomplished against the backdrop of Alberto's latest creation, which he rehearses and stages in Gainesville, Florida during the shooting of the film. Alberto's creative drive proves to be as intense in Gainesville as it was at the Bolshoi, as intense at 90 years of age as it was at 30, and as intense with community college students as it was with prima ballerinas dancing at the pinnacle of talent and venue.
