Dancing at Lughnasa is based on the 1990 stage play of the same name by Irish playwright Brian Friel. The story centers around the lives of the five unmarried Mundy sisters sharing a cottage in 1936 rural Ireland, and is narrated in flashback by Michael Evans (Darryl Johnston), the illegitimate son of one of the sisters, Christina (Catherine McCormack). The action takes place around the Celtic harvest festival of Lughnasa, in early August. Father Jack Mundy (Michael Gambon), the lone brother of the clan, returns home from a 25-year mission at a leper colony in Africa, having lost his faith; their devout eldest sister Kate (Meryl Streep) strives to keep the family intact and happy despite their poverty and isolation. The reappearance of Gerry Evans (Rhys Ifans), Michael's father, complicates matters, as no one knows about the sincerity of his supposed intention to marry Christina at long last. Friel based the story on the lives of his mother and aunts, who lived in County Donegal, Ireland.moreless
