Dangerous Liaisons is a 1988 drama directed by Stephen Frears. Winner of three Academy Awards, the film focuses on a group of wealthy and bored aristocrats in 18th century France. When one of the Marquise de Merteuil's (Glenn Close) ex-lovers, Gercourt (Keanu Reeves), becomes engaged to be married, she wants to humiliate him before his wedding. The Marquise enlists the help of another one of her ex-lovers, Vicomte de Valmont (John Malkovich), to seduce Gercourt's finance, Cecile de Volanges (Uma Thurman). Meanwhile, Valmont has another woman in his sights, the beautiful and married Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer). The Marquise, however, doubts that Valmont will have any success with the religious Tourvel. The Marquise bets him a night of sex with her if he can provide proof of his conquest. All bets are off, however, when Valmonte begins to fall in love with Madame de Tourvel and the Marquise's jealousy puts them all at risk.
