Dante's Inferno has had many incarnations, and now director Sean Meredith has remade the book as a modern-day gothic puppet drama. A paper puppet version of Virgil (James Cromwell) guides Dante (Dermot Mulroney) through several complex hand-drawn levels of hell. These puppets are not meant for children, as Meredith gives the story a sharp modern edge of violence and sin. Dante is a low-income 20-something man making his way in the modern wasteland of capitalism when he wakes up in a place that looks very similar to the one he just left. Finding Virgil, he follows the guide down through a hell populated with businessmen and politicians, giving the experience an end-of-the-world setting. Many of these familiar faces are taking the punishment of their earthly sins, a creepy touch especially for those characters who are not yet dead in our world. The film is definitely satirical, and may encourage a few laughs, but in the end it is a hard look at the modern world.moreless
